Big Companies Can Turn the Tide on Food Waste—if They Act Now!
Forbes published a piece in October 2022, written by Food Tank president Danielle Nierenberg, arguing that large companies could meaningfully cut global food waste if they acted quickly. The article centered on IKEA, which halved its food waste over four years while saving more than $37 million and 20 million meals, but also cited Winnow's work with foodservice company ISS Guckenheimer, which saved over 1 million meals and $2.6 million annually using Winnow's AI tracking technology. Winnow founder Marc Zornes was quoted on what it takes to make such programs succeed, saying it comes down to "focusing the organization and putting incentives in place." ReFED executive director Dana Gunders called IKEA's results "a beacon of hope" for the wider industry. Winnow appears here as one example among several, alongside references to the 10x20x30 supply chain initiative and companies including Walmart and Kroger.
